New York, Sept (SF) .- Amazon announced its ambitious plans to fight climate change: they will acquire 100,000 electric vehicles from the manufacturer Rivian, with whom they will distribute their orders from 2021.
The founder of the company Jeff Bezos anounced the buy a week before the Climate Week in New York, where the most important companies on the planet and different prominent personalities will seek solutions to fight against climate change.
Amazon’s order becomes the largest in the world of ecological models for parcel delivery. The manufacturer chosen to supply all these environmentally friendly vans has been Rivian.
With this very important movement, Amazon is committed to complying with the Paris Agreement against climate change signed in 2015 ten years ahead of schedule. “If a company with as much physical infrastructure as Amazon, which delivers more than 10,000 million items a year, can comply with the Paris Agreement ten years before, then any company can do it,” said Bezos.
At the moment the model chosen by the North American company is unknown, although we do know that the first copies will start operating in 2021. Amazon’s forecasts go through having 10,000 electric vans circulating on the roads a year later and having 100 % of the order by 2030, year marked on the calendar to use 100% renewable energy. In addition, another of the company’s objectives is to be carbon neutral by 2040.
The calculations made by Amazon indicate that with this purchase of 100,000 organic products, four million tons of carbon will be saved per year. On the other hand, the company announced that it will invest about 91 million euros in reforestation projects worldwide.
